This plot shows statistics for network transfers from ISAS to GSFC using rcp. Each dot represents a single file transfer, with only files larger than a megabyte shown. This is to avoid scatter from the connection overhead shown in the rate vs. size plot Also, transfers done before 5 PM (EST) are shown in red, while transfers done after 5 PM are shown in blue. Transfers done after 5 PM tend to be ~50% faster, as is shown in the rate vs. time of day plot.
The evolution of transfer rates with time is a competition between advancing technology and increasing usage. The apparent decline in transfer rate in late 1998 is probably due to the fact that those transfers occurred at an unadvantageous time of day. No significant trends are visible with the current short baseline. The mean transfer rate is roughly 50 kilobytes/second.
